Our family and friends are fleeing war in Ukraine
Spende geschützt
My name is John Davey, I work in energy conservation for Tacoma Power and my wife is Mariia Pozhar who is from Odessa, Ukraine. We live in Tacoma, Washington. Life in Ukraine is getting catastrophically more dangerous everyday. Our family and friends that live in Ukraine need assistance to leave the country as soon as possible. Every day it is getting harder to find food, water, electricity, heat, transportation, medical assistance and safety. People are leaving with only what they can carry to escape the fighting. Your help now can get people to safety and give them hope.
Who we are helping
Masha's parents, who like many people in their 60’s they have health problems and so leaving the familiarity of their home was an extraordinarily difficult decision. They have made it to Tacoma and are staying with us as they try to rebuild their lives here.
Also Mariia’s cousins, nieces and aunt who live in Central Ukraine, in the city of Dnipro, have made the difficult and terrifying decision to leave their homes and seek safety in the EU. They have gotten on a train with four young children and are leaving behind their apartments, a house in the woods they built, a clothing business they built from the ground up, their friends and the city they grew up in. And most heartbreaking, because men between the age of 18-60 are not allowed to leave the country, families are being separated to get children to safety. These are the sweetest, kindest people who are faced with terrifying choices with dire consequences. We want them to make it safely out of this nightmare and have a future to look forward to.
And our other amazing friends who helped us for so many years, we want to help them too. Some of them, thankfully, are safe in a new country, but they have only what they could carry, and are anxious about what is next. Some who are still in Ukraine hoping things will get better and need support while they hunker down or, when they have to, move to safety.
How we are helping
For our Ukrainian family and friends, we are directly paying for travel costs, food, clothing, short term accommodations, medicine, toys, replacing items left behind, legal fees, visa application fees, plane tickets, resettlement costs, money in their pockets, anything they need to be comfortable or gives them a chance for a better future. The goal is to get people to safety, provide hope and maybe somehow help ease the terror of the unknown and the total loss they are feeling. 100% of all donations will go directly to Ukrainian refugees.
Our story
Mariia Pozhar was born in Odessa, Ukraine and I moved there in 2009. Odessa is a magical city; a swirling mess of people strolling through wit, beauty, genius and crumbling facades. We opened hostels there because we wanted the world to have a fun and safe place to enjoy the city.
In 2014, Russia invaded and we helplessly watched the violence and economic collapse spread. We were forced to close the hostels and felt the loss and tragedy of having to leave the community we had grown to love. Fortunately, we had the support to rebuild our lives in Tacoma, Washington and we want to help rebuild the lives of our family and friends fleeing war.
