Buy Nook's a New Air Conditioner!

Friends,

Nook’s Barber Shop is a staple in the Deanwood neighborhood of DC. It is the place local folks have been getting their hair done for generations. The owner, pastor Wayne 'Nook' Palmer a long time pillar in the community, passed away and the shop is now run by his wonderful wife Sabrina.

On June 13th, 2018 the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) harassed and conducted an illegal, violent stop-and-frisk of young men sitting in front of the Nook's. These young men have the permission of the owner who has known them since they were children. The video went viral and further exposed the ongoing harassment and violent action of the Gun Recovery Unit not only in front of Nook's but in Black neighborhoods all over DC.

When tensions mounted and the situation attracted media attention, MPD lied and said Nook's had called police and disparaged the business publicly in an effort to divide the community, the business suffered. The heavy presence of police lately has also continues to affect business. City officials as well as MPD  have repeatedly and publicly criminalized the young Black men and women claiming the over-policing of that block is necessary due to the crime occurring there. The truth is MPD’s crime stats show a 50% drop in crime on that block for the last year.

The community had been working collectively to rebuild the number of clients when the air conditioning unit went out. As it turns out the copper and other parts from the unit were stollen. With temperatures over 100 for several days this also significantly impacted business drastically. It is just too hot for many to sit and get their hair done in that heat.

Black Lives Matter DC was able to find a licensed HVAC business owner who volunteered to do the initial assessment of the air conditioner and after realizing it needed to be replaced also offered to complete the labor for free or to greatly reduce the cost of labor. The new unit plus parts and labor will cost $4,000.

This is where you come in! We know with your help we can get the shop a new air conditioner and have it up and running ASAP hopefully at no cost to her! So please donate generously and encourage everyone you know to do the same.

WE CAN DO THIS!
