Volunteering in Sri Lanka
Donation protected
Hello! My name is Millie, I am a 3rd year Psychology student and am currently on a placement year working as a Volunteer Assistant Psychologist 4 days a week. I am also working part-time as a carer at the West of England School for the blind, where my brother is a resident. After I graduate university I hope to become a Clinical Psychologist specialising in either learning disabilities or autism.
Next summer I am going to Sri Lanka for 5 weeks to volunteer in a psychiatric hospital, a school and a facility which supports children with special needs. The country is still recovering from a 25-year civil war and the devastation left by the 2004 Tsunami, as a result mental health resources are stretched and there is a huge demand for specialist psychological help. I will be working 5 days a week helping to run activity sessions for children with special needs, teaching English to young adults and providing much needed stimulation to those with mental health conditions. I will be immersing myself into a completely new culture and gain experience working in a very different health context to the NHS. While I will only be there for a short time I hope to make an impact by showing kindness and giving value to each person I meet.
The organisation I will be going through is called SLV Global, if you would like to find out more about the work I will be doing please visit their website (https://slv.global/placements-abroad/sri-lanka/mental-health-placement).
In order to fund this volunteer work I will need to raise £3000. Half of this will go towards the placement fees which cover rent, food, training and in-country support. The remaining £1500 will pay for flights, insurance, vaccinations, accommodation on the weekends and transport. I am aiming to save enough money to cover the placement fees through my part-time caring job but I will need to fundraise the remaining £1500. To do this I have decided to run the Brighton Marathon (Yes, a full 26.2 miles!). I would be extremely grateful for any donations you could spare, every little really does help!!
Thank you for taking the time to read my GoFundMe page!
