Helping special needs family after Sandy

To all my dear friends, family, and community:

We are a very special and unique family that moved to Long Island in 2011 and was severely impacted by the storm. Julie has many medical problems and lost most of her mobility and accessibility equipment when the storm surges caused uninsured damage. Colin is 11 and is extremely gifted but also is on the Autism Spectrum and lost everything in the basement, garage, and backyard that he uses for self-calming, behavior control, and many items associated with his unique hobbies and special interests.  Edward went back to school over the last 8 years earning his Doctorate at age 53 to achieve his dream to become a Professor. His goal is help young men and women to get their teacher's certification in STEM careers or go into Technology and Engineering careers. He grew up in a rural Appalachian community where many families never got past high school and poverty was rampant. We lost many things in our home and our cars but we have each other. Unfortunately we lost many of the special needs items that our family uses daily.

Part of our rental home and all of our cars and personal items in the basement and garage were destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. Since then, a large sinkhole was found under the foundation of the basement. We were forced to relocate to temporary housing due to structural problems and further collapse of a sinkhole at the foundation. 

We lost 3 cars used for different types of accessibility (snow vs rest of the year) and my accessibility scooter and walker. My son lost his computer, his wii, his tv, and his electronic drums and keyboard and other sports games and devices.
