Lenny AKA “The Newport Kid” Needs Help!

 

 

Imagine undergoing cervical spine surgery followed by 6 weeks of medical rehabilitation and consultations only to discover the procedure was not entirely effective necessitating the entire process being repeated and instead of success it ultimately resulted in a medical emergency with a price tag of $95000.00. That’s what happened to Lenny.

 

After spending 20 years in a volunteer educational work, Lenny and his wife Elaine left their beloved home of 40 years on the island of Kauai and moved to Mexico. However, because of chronic back pain, Lenny agreed to the fusing of 4 vertebrae in his back. Unfortunately, because their medical insurance was only valid for procedures in the U.S. they had to fly to California for both the first and second operations and the resultant medical follow up. To offset the cost of flights and accommodation in the U.S, Lenny and Elaine consulted a surgeon in Mexico for monitoring purposes. Just two months after the second operation was performed, the consulting surgeon in Mexico broke the bad news to Lenny that he would have to undergo an emergency operation due to a fracture on the #5 vertebrae. Flying to California again was out of the question as it could result in paralysis or, even worse, death.

 

Authorisation was requested for supplemental medical insurance to cover the emergency procedure in Mexico and two days later a team of doctors spent 10 hours in what, finally, appears to be a successful surgery.

 

However, due to and administration error, it appears the medical insurance was not properly applied for according to 3 specific criteria, resulting in a medical bill, without recuperation and rehabilitation expenses, of just over $95000.00 which is unattainable for Lenny and Elaine.
