Lions Feeding the Frontlines

As a retired nurse of more than forty years, I’ve had my share of understaffed and stressful shifts. But as I watched the news and saw the updated daily reports, I shuddered as I realized this was different. Not only are our emergency workers putting their own lives on the line to an unprecedented degree - they now have the added emotional burden of knowing that they may be asking their families and loved ones to sacrifice their health too. Yet, despite the risk, every single emergency worker I’ve seen is giving 110%.

I wanted to help, but I didn’t know how. This pandemic is affecting us all, and even as we as a community are seeking to band together like never before, businesses and local restaurants are hurting like never before. I watched as restaurants scrambled to adapt to only having drive-thrus and carry-outs while also having to cut the majority of their staff. Then I realized - what if there were a way to help emergency workers and restaurants help each other during this time?

As a member of the Lafayette Lions Club, I brought up the idea to a number of our members and together we started Lions Feeding the Frontlines. The Lions Club motto has always been “We Serve.” And now, our mission remains to serve our community by providing meals to healthcare providers in all areas, fire and police stations, and shelters while purchasing meals from local independantly owned restaurants and eating establishments to help them through this difficult time, both now and even when we begin to reopen and rebuild as a community.

We are asking for you, our community, to help. We can’t do this alone. But we can do this together. Every dollar we receive goes directly to local restaurants to support local emergency and healthcare workers with zero overhead expenses. Our goal is to purchase one-hundred meals a day, five days a week,  for as long as this shelter-in-place order remains and extending into the few weeks after to boost business as restaurants begin to recover.

This is something that needs to be done now, and every day counts. Let's get to work Feeding the Frontlines!
