Keep Tagen Rolling In A New Adapted Van

Donation protected
My name is Tagen Marshall.  I have cerebral palsy with significant mobility challenges, and I need your help. I was a foster child for 7 years, and after aging out of the system last year, I’ve been able to keep living with my old foster family.  I require a wheelchair-accessible van to be involved in my community and achieve my educational dreams. I am a third-year university honour student, working on a bachelor of arts degree with a major in philosophy. After completing my bachelor's degree, I plan to move on to graduate studies in philosophy. My long-term goal is to be a teacher of philosophy. A wheelchair-accessible van is essential for me to attend university.

I would also use the van to engage with my community. I volunteer with the Federation of BC Youth in Care Networks helping current and former foster care youth to develop a peer-support community. I am also active in a local faith-based community, and provide spiritual leadership to a men's group. Having a van that is adapted to accommodate my wheelchair is essential for me to continue my involvement in these groups. I can’t leave home without a wheelchair van, unless I am carried.

I am asking for your assistance to purchase this vital healthcare-related tool. My current van is aging and the repair costs are becoming greater than the vehicle is worth. Most people take the freedom of a vehicle for granted, but for those like me who require a wheelchair full time, there are very few options. My van has been a life-changer, but losing it also has considerable life-changing consequences.

The health care agencies that support me rule out using their funding to purchase wheelchair-accessible vehicles. There is literally no public sector funding for an essential healthcare-related tool such as this.

The modifications necessary to make a vehicle accessible to wheelchairs are considerable, and only some vehicles are suitable. The cost of the adaptations can almost be as much as the vehicle itself. The mobility experts have recommended a 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid, which will cost $89,769.40 after taxes.

I would be very grateful if you could contribute in any way to this cause and help keep me on the road.
