Our teammate and friend Karrie James and her husband, Eric, just embarked on their brave journey to fight and beat cancer.
Just a few short weeks ago Karrie and Eric received the devastating news that Eric has been diagnosed with stage IV small cell carcinoma, originating in the prostate that has metastasized to his bones. Small cell carcinoma is rare, accounting for less than 1% of all prostate cancers. This being a rare cancer is compounded by the fact that the average age for this type of cancer is 60+.
Eric is young, incredibly active and lives a healthy lifestyle. The news of this diagnosis was a shock but Eric and Karrie took immediate action: seeking 2nd and 3rd opinions, changing their diet and researching everything they could about this disease. Oncology teams at Northwestern and University of Chicago worked together while doctors at MD Anderson weighed in to find the best course of treatment for Eric. Their treatment plan, including radiation and aggressive chemotherapy, was immediate and is ongoing at Northwestern in downtown Chicago.
Karrie and Eric have two young, beautiful, bright kids, Everett (5) and Elle (2). Eric is a loving stay-at-home dad and he is the center of their entire world. While this diagnosis has been a shock, Karrie and Eric are facing it head-on with grace, courage and determination.
We ask that you consider helping them in their fight. Any donation would potentially help them travel to consult with oncologists, relieve medical bills, help with meal preparation, child care and the ongoing treatments both in and out of the hospital.
