Community Organic Vegetable Garden
Spende geschützt
Huixcazdhá is a small rural community of roughly 500 people in the state of Hidalgo in central Mexico. Many people there are subsistence farmers, growing just enough to feed their families. The lack of economic opportunity drives many people to leave everything behind and make the dangerous trip to the United States of America to work and send back money to support their families. Some years ago, a socially responsible company called San Miguel de Proyectos Agropecuarios (San Miguel) built a small amaranth processing plant in the community, providing a stable source of employment for many in the community.
What is amaranth, you ask? It’s the Mexican variety of quinoa and it has been cultivated and consumed in Mexico since the days of the Aztecs. It’s also a super food, and since the local people began to eat amaranth regularly through San Miguel’s work in the community, there has not been a single case of infant malnutrition in Huixcazdhá in the last ten years!
Despite the high amounts of protein that adults and children consume through amaranth, the daily diet of the families in the community still lacks essential vitamins and minerals provided by the vegetables that many of us eat every day and take for granted. The vegetables that are sold in the community are brought in by outsiders, are treated with pesticides and chemical fertilizers and are sold at a mark-up that makes them inaccessible for many people in the community. In view of the need for safe, healthy and affordable vegetables, the community has mobilized and decided to grow fresh, organic produce locally.
Utopía Huixcazdhá is a registered, local non-profit organization staffed mainly by people from the community. Our organization works with community members and San Miguel to identify needs and design and implement community development projects together. Utopía Huixcazdhá, San Miguel and the people of Huixcazdhá are planning a community organic vegetable garden and we need your help to make it a reality!
The land for the 2,150 ft² garden has already been donated. Your donation of $5, $10, $25, $50, $100 or more will help the community pay for technical assistance and training from regional organic gardening experts, seeds, fencing, gardening tools, and a 63,400 gallon underground cistern and rainwater catchment system – essential for the short-term and long-term success of the project given the scarcity of fresh water in the community. Please support this project and help us spread the word. All of our supporters will receive regular updates, including videos and pictures, and we welcome you to visit us in Mexico so that you can see our progress, experience Mexican hospitality and fall in love with the magical community of Huixcazdhá!
Thank you in advance for your support!
