Yellow House: Volunteer Abroad

Donation protected
My name is Avery Borchers and I am  a sophomore at Ohio State University studying Speech Pathology. I was excited to come across a foundation that would enhance my skills in my specific career field. Yellow House is located in Western Kenya. Yellow House works with children with communication disabilities who do not have the financial necessities to afford the proper care. What is extremely special about Yellow House is that it was founded to offer completely free care. The people of Kenya who face communication disabilites are on the rise while the ability to give them help dwindles. I look forward to this amazing  opportunity in assisting with therapy sessions and the life experiences that working with this community will provide. I am raising money for the fees to room and board at Yellow House for four weeks with the practicing Speech Pathologist as well as airfare. Any extra money raised will be spent on school supplies and toys for the children that I will bring to Kenya with me. I need all the support I can get.

Our Vision:

Yellow House is a community based multi-disciplinary child development service organization that provides education, therapeutic services and outreach to children with disabilities and their families with the fundamental belief that communication is a basic human right that should be accessible and achievable by all.
Our goals:

1. To offer free or affordable (re)habilitation and educational support services to individuals with disabilities.

2. To work within existing community infrastructure to provide speech-language and other rehabilitation services as an integral component (rather than an add-on) of education and care for individuals with disabilities.

3. To provide access to books and other resources, and create locally produced education materials to individuals, families and teachers who work with children with disabilities.

4. To organize trainings in communication related topics to support the professional development of teachers, carers, parents, health care workers and other related rehabilitation professionals.

5. To support the growth of the speech language therapy profession in East Africa so that more children can receive communication disability services.
