Hello my name is Paka, and I need your help!
I am in need of surgery to remove a tumor in my left knee. I set up this page because cost of the surgery is incredibly high, and the pressure on my family to find a way to help pay for it has been pretty devastating.
I have accumulated substantial medical bills because my insurance only covers a very small percentage of my healthcare costs; sometimes it covers nothing at all. My expenses include: visits to the doctor's office, MRIs, x-rays, medication, transportation, specialists, and of course surgery.
Here is a little about me.
I'm an aspiring classical singer and musician born in Honolulu, HI currently residing in Johnson City, TN. I just completed my undergraduate degree in vocal performance at East Tennessee State University and am currently pursuing my masters at Shenandoah Conservatory in the fall. My only dream is to be a full time professional singer and performer after I finish graduate school!
(a Hawaiian in its natural element..)
In the fall of 2013, I painfully herniated a disk in my neck. After carefully consideration of my options, I opted not to have surgery to repair the disk because of the anterior nature of the operation. They actually would have had the cut through the front of my neck, which carried possible permanent vocal damage. As an aspiring singer, this was the worst news I could get, thankfully I was able to recover using only physical therapy over a period of 6-8 months. I'm still not 100% but very very close.
Then about 4 months ago, I gracefully hurt myself again when I was kickboxing, or so I thought. I was confident I had damaged my ACL, but avoided the doctor for a while because my previous neck injury had caused me to accumulate a large amount of medical bills: just physical therapy and visits were anywhere from $50 to $350 a piece. Not to mention a $1,800 MRI and hospital bill! Once the pain started getting worse, and I was unable to walk without a knee brace and occasionally a cane, I decided to cough up the money and go to a specialist.
Finally, I broke down and went to an orthopedic surgeon who suggested to x-ray it: this was of course when the tumor showed up. Although he informed me that it was benign (not cancerous) there still exists a small chance for it to develop, and the location is causing nerve damage. He suggested surgery to remove it. This time physical therapy wasn't an option.
(Not the greatest picture but the tumor is the bulge on the left side of my leg and knee)
So I'm asking for your help. I know times are super hard, but my insurance has made it clear I'm on my own and I don't know where to turn. The toal cost of everything is calculated well over $10,000 I'm just trying to raise a portion of that until I can get back on my feet.
I will actually be able to have the surgery on the 21st because my family agreed to front the initial costs but there is still much I will owe, including a total of $5,000 for just the operation.
I don't want to lose my one chance at attending a great conservatory, so I'm selling much of my stuff. If you are interested, check out some of my tri-cities craigslist ads :)
Even if you can just donate your prayers and wishes, I would really appreciate it. This has been hard on my whole family and we can certainly use the love.
I want to give back in the best way I know how: with music and poetry. If you are able to donate certain amounts, I will record you a poem, song, or even write you one as a token of my thanks! I do all kinds of music including: opera-classical, pop, rock, jazz, r&b, folk, etc. Please don't hestitate to ask me any questions via email.
