Help Kevin Sing at Carnegie Hall!
Donation protected
I am Kevin Powell and I’m writing to ask for your help!
I am a third-year elementary music teacher; son and grandson of music lovers Kim and Ray Powell and Wendy Boorn; and cousin of composer Michael Schelle. As a young professional musician, I have specialized in playing the French horn, percussion and most recently, the voice. I am privileged to be a member of the fantastic and well-respected Senior Choir at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Phoenix, Arizona under the direction of Scott Youngs.

I have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to perform in February, 2017, with members of the All Saints Senior Choir at historic Carnegie Hall in New York City! We will be performing George Frederic Handel’s Coronation Anthems, a large work with full orchestra.
So here is the good news:
When our director Scott was asked to conduct this portion of the esteemed program, he told us that he would agree, but only on the condition that he could bring his Senior Choir to perform as part of the mass choir of two hundred members!
And now to the bad news:
We have to pay our own way! Each choir member must raise a great deal of money to fund their participation in the rehearsals and concert at Carnegie Hall, in addition to airfare, housing and food for four nights in New York City. I estimate that I will need a total of $2,800 to cover my expenses.
As you might imagine, as a music teacher in Arizona, with some of the lowest teacher salaries in the country, I am simply unable to fund this experience on my own. To help pay for the trip, I have just been hired by Amazon Inc. for an 8-hour/week warehouse job, but this will be far from sufficient. This has led to my decision to ask you - family and friends, new and old - for a donation of any amount that will bring me closer to my goal of traveling the road to Carnegie Hall.
I joined the Senior Choir at All Saints’ in August of 2015, not only to improve my singing skills, but also to grow professionally as a choral educator and conductor by engaging in an atmosphere that expects high-quality, challenging choral repertoire on a weekly basis. I have benefitted immensely from our director Scott’s tutelage:
- I have learned to create a more supportive environment for students of all ability levels.
- I have learned new techniques to achieve a beautiful sound, both in my own voice and those of my students.
- I have learned to set high expectations for my own 4th-6th grade chorus by challenging them in meaningful ways to become better citizens and musicians.
It would mean the world to me to engage in this experience. By contributing to this campaign, you will not only facilitate my growth as an artist and teacher, but you will open the door to memories and tools that will benefit me and my students, as I work toward helping them become lifelong music makers and music lovers!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!
