BE THE CHANGE

Women in third world countries face many challenges that women in developed countries do not have to worry about or, in some instances, even take for granted. I am currently volunteering at the Kakenya Centre for Excellence in a small village in Kenya, Africa. I have been here since October 1st, and hope to stay through the end of April, 2014. This program works in the prevention of early marriage, early pregnancy and female genital mutilation of young girls. Many of these young girls are forced into marriage for a variety of reasons both socially and economically. Keyword being "forced". There are programs in place to empower women - to keep them from having to make these choices that can be detrimental to their health, safety, and well being. I am working in one such program. Kakenya Ntaiya, a top ten CNN hero in 2013, is an amazing woman who has suffered FGM herself and has made a life mission out of building a school dedicated to the prevention of FGM and early marriage. Many people in the world have the desire to help, but do not have the time or circumstances that allow them to give back in this way. I have the time, I have the circumstances, I can pick up and move to Africa for a period of time, but need the help financially. I know in my heart, deep down in my BONES that I am being called to do this work. I am calling on YOU to help me get there. Together we can make a difference and change lives for the better.
