Harper Helps the Homeless - San Diego Edition

Donation protected
Fall is upon us now. Dew clings to the windshield of our old but trusty 4Runner in the mornings. I find myself checking the weather and thrilling at the idea of a cool night ripe with opportunity for knee high boots, scarves and spiced cider. Just a few days ago we bought Harper a brand new coat. As we hit these annual milestones, I find myself thinking about just how cold I would be without my scarves and my hoodies, my cozy house that sometimes teeters on the edge of too warm and my down comforter.

In light of that, my daughter Harper and I have decided to make packs for the homeless and we would like some help. With nearly 10,000 homeless people in the city, we are going to need all the assistance we can get. We'd like to start distributing them in November in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas when the weather is especially wet and unkind.

Inside each bag we will include coveted hygiene items, high protein snacks, a handwritten note, and a list of local resources available to homeless people in our area. Our bare bone pack will include deodorant, toothpaste, a toothbrush, a comb, an umbrella, chapstick, wet wipes, hand sanitizer and a snacks in a resealable plastic bag. Each one will cost us about $10. Harper said she wants to make 105 of them, so that's our goal. 105 x $10 = $1050

Ideally we would like to be able to put each pack into a backpack and provide some other items like socks, gloves, and sweatshirts so we are going to make our goal $2000 in donations which is asking for a lot. We know but we dream big in this house and we believe in the power of many people working together in small increments to make big projects come together.

Many people prefer to send items rather than money and we understand that. We have created an Amazon wishlist
. Any items purchased from this list
will arrive at our door.

We are looking for the following in kind donations if you have extra:
Deodorant ,Toothpaste, Tooth brushes, Combs, Blankets, Target Gift Cards (for purchasing supplies), Umbrellas, Backpacks, Winter Coats, Sweat Shirts, Subway Gift Cards, Chapstick, Disposable Razors, Mints/Gum, Wet Wipes, Clif Bars, Gloves, Travel Sized Kleenex, Warm Socks, Etc.

FAQs:

Monetary donations can be made via this page. Simply click the donate button above and follow the subsequent instructions. If you would rather donate via check or cash email us at [email redacted] and I will get back to you with an address where donations can be mailed.

How can I donate in-kind items?
You can either order from our amazon wishlist
-->
OR
Email us at [email redacted] and we will get you an address where in kind donations can be dropped off or sent.

I can't donate but is there anything else I can do?
Yes. There are two things you can do to help. The first is share this with your friends. Share on facebook, twitter, Tumblr, and the rest of your social media sites. Send out an email letting people know what we are doing and how they can help. The second is to send a handwritten note of encouragement. Each pack will contain a note and a list of local resources. Email us at [email redacted] and we will get you an address to send the notes.

I have another idea on how to raise money:
We are open to innovative ideas. Email us at [email redacted] with your ideas!

What will happen to any items that do not fit into the packs?
Any items that do not get distributed amongst the public will be donated directly to a homeless shelter. We are working on creating a partnership with a local shelter and will update everyone as that information becomes available.

How do we know the money is going to these packs?
First of all, this page is a very public profession of our intent and is being disbursed amongst our community. Secondly, we will be posting updates with photos of our project so those who donate will be able to participate in our success.
