HJA 2015 Delegation to Haiti!

Hi! We are the Haiti Justice Alliance and we are going to Haiti on January 5th for a week long visit. The Haiti Justice Alliance (HJA)'s mission is to work for the sustainable structural changes needed to provide social, political and economic rights to all Haitians.

The strength of the Haiti Justice Alliance is in our collaborative effort to support our partner groups. We support established grassroots efforts to create just solutions to Haitian problems. Rather than creating new programs, we seek out and support grassroots groups that successfully work on a range of issues (listed below). 

Leah, Jordan, Paul and Natalie of the Haiti Justice Alliance as well as Fran Quigley, author and professor at Indiana University, will spend a week meeting with our partner organizations -- hoping to learn, share, and find ways that we can support their efforts throughout 2015.

Here is where you come in! We are hoping to raise $1,000 for each of our primary partner organizations as well as $1,000 more to distribute to other organizations that we work with. It will be the 5th year anniversary of the devestating earthquake while we are in Port-au-Prince. If you have been following the recovery efforts, you know that it has been well documented that the traditional modes of disaster relief, however well intentioned, failed for the Haitian people after the quake in 2010. What we saw time and time again, however, was that there was effective and meaningful work that was able to carried out when it was orchestrated by thoughtful and dedicated Haitian organizations, such as the ones we work with. Next month, we will deliver this money directly to the people doing the work on the ground and there is an opportunity for you to help us do this. We know that money is tight around the holiday season, but ask that you consider donating to support what these incredible and dedicated people are doing. Perhaps as a gift for the person that has it all or as a year end donation. Your generous donations have had and will have a tremendous impact. Thank you.

1. SOPUDEP School is a Haitian founded and run grassroots organization located in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. SOPUDEP’s focus is on providing accessible education to adults and children, supporting children’s and women’s rights, and creating programs of economic empowerment for members of their community. They also work closely with other local organizations to help them achieve these same goals in other communities that face economic and social challenges. (http://www.sopudep.org/)

2. Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti/ Bureau des Avocats Internationaux: works with the peo­ple of Haiti in their non-violent strug­gle for the con­sol­i­da­tion of con­sti­tu­tional democ­racy, jus­tice and human rights, by dis­trib­ut­ing objec­tive and accu­rate infor­ma­tion on human rights con­di­tions in Haiti, pur­su­ing legal cases, and coop­er­at­ing with human rights and sol­i­dar­ity groups in Haiti and abroad. IJDH draws on its founders’ internationally-acclaimed suc­cess accom­pa­ny­ing Haiti’s poor major­ity in the fields of law, med­i­cine and social jus­tice activism. We seek the restora­tion of the rule of law and democ­racy in the short term, and work for the long-term sus­tain­able change nec­es­sary to avert Haiti’s next crisis. (http://www.ijdh.org/)

3. What If? Foundation: in partnership with members of the Ti Plas Kazo community of Port-au-Prince, has been providing hot, nutritious meals to hungry children in Haiti’s capital for over 14 years. Each child who comes to the food program receives a plate of fresh vegetables, rice, beans, and sometimes a small piece of meat or fish. In addition to having other community projects beyond the food program, the What If? Foundation continues to do all they can to support the local economy and agricultural self-sufficiency in Haiti.
