Imagine pursuing a dream to create a home for your newborn before Christmas, only to realize your savings has been stolen and instead of going home, you will return from the baby's birth to a family emergency shelter.
This past week, at least five St. Louis families living in emergency shelter care have been scammed out of their life savings while they saved up money for a new home.
Hoping to move their families into new homes before Christmas, the five women had been diligently saving money. They became anxious to get the process moved forward, and they placed their trust in an outside housing "promoter" rather than working through their case managers at Gateway180, a family residential shelter in St. Louis.
Unfortunately, their "dream come true" turned into a nightmare when the supposed agent of the housing authority was revealed to be a con artist who stole their money by promising non-existant housing.
“She told me she charged $150 to help me find housing and she needed half the deposit up front and she needed the rest when we moved in,” said Tamara Hawkins, who paid a total of $575 for a house in Northwoods.
Cynthia Gerrells, grandmother and the sole support of a young grandson, gave this woman $650 for an apartment in south city. And Shanna Williams, mother of five and due to give birth this week, gave $650 for a townhouse in Country Club Hills to this housing scam.
None of them got receipts, leases, or any type of paperwork. None of them wound up getting housed. Wlliams said the woman won their trust and sold them on the idea.
“All of us thought that this was the blessing that we’ve been waiting for,” Williams said. “And the opportunity we’ve been waiting for to get back on our feet.”
Help these women and their families move into housing before Chirstmas. Every little bit helps. Please make a donation today to this "Home for the Holiday" campaign through Gofundme.
