10 years of being a homeless advocate, I have never crossed so many homeless families which included several children, as I have in 2019.
I have met several families since the summer of 2019 which include a family of 12: 10 kids, mom and dad. Family of 3: 1 child, mom & dad (dad is legally blind and wheelchair bound).
Family of 8: 3 adults which include mom, grandma & uncle then 5 kids. Our most recent case is a family of 6: 6 kids which include b/g infant twins, and a 6 year old set of twins (yes, TWO sets of twins) and their 2 siblings up to 9 years of age. There is also a family of 3 whom I met in Galveston when I was taking a mini-vacation which I purchased their dinner and motel for the night before they went into a shelter the following day.
It has been heartbreaking to see so many children affected by homelessness. This goes to show that homeless can happen to anybody including families with children involved. Every person has their own individual story and this is why I've been working feverishly over the last decade to break down the stereotype about the homeless community. Something as simple as losing a job isn't the only reason anymore. The 6 children mentioned above recently lost their mother to suicide after she tried escaping an abusive marriage. We are not here to judge the situation but to help these children in need. Many do not understand the traumatizing experience that can be hindered on these children. While the City of Houston has assisted with housing many homeless, unfortunately it is not as easy to place family in housing as it is for a single homeless individual. Our family of 12 has been waiting since July 2019.
It's an ongoing effort that not only takes time but money as well. A lot of our own gets used bc that's just what we do.
