Lake County Disaster

Tax deductible
My Name is Tony Heuschel and I represent the California Cadet Academy a non-profit in Napa County, California. Federal Tax ID # 54-2186405.

The Valley Fire displaced over 500 families from Napa and Lake Counties. The homes and businesses destroyed by fire cost the victims their livelihoods and changed their way of life forever. Most victims fled with the clothing on their backs and nothing more.

The story of my friend is the most touching. While at work and unable to get home, her husband franticly collected their animals. Faced with the daunting task of deciding which animals to save and which to leave behind, it soon became apparent. He was physically unable to load all of the animals into his truck and trailer.  He did collected some of their horses and all of their dogs.

Unfortunately, some animals did parish. There are many more stories just like this one. The end result is their home was reduced to nothing more than a driveway.

The Cadet Academy is a Napa non-profit dedicated to public safety. Our goal is to concentrate on relief efforts. We collected food and clothing donations on 9/15 and delivered them to the evacuation center in Calistoga. At this time, there appears to be adequate supplies to sustain the evacuation center for several weeks.

We heard from many people who are in need of housing for the future due to the lack of insurance or ability to obtain funding. An elderly couple were found sleeping on the ground at the evacuation center. When asked why they were not using cots or a tent, it was learned they didn't have the ability. They were unable to pitch a tent and didn't ask for cots. The couple was too modest to ask for help and despite the difficult conditions, they refused to complain.

We are asking to fund to provide temporary shelters for the Lake County areas affected by the Valley Fire.

Our goal is to provide Campers, Travel Trailers, and Tents to the residents while they rebuild their community. This fund is intended for people who have no other means of support like one gentleman I met who lost everything. His place of business and his entire apartment were burned to the ground as a result of the fire.

His car was spared because it broke down on the way out of town. It was abandoned in a parking lot outside of the burn zone. All he has left is his precious family and the clothing they had on as they fled.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to this story. Any contribution no matter how small will make a difference. Donations are tax deductible and a thank you letter will be sent confirming your donation.

When one of the victims was asked what he wanted to do, he said, "Just get home."

Anyone in need of temporary housing or shelter should submit a request on or Disaster Website Disasterrelief911.org. We will also be visiting the area in the California Cadet Academy vehicle which is a fully marked emergency SUV equipped with lights and side markings. We will be conducting needs assessments on a weekly basis to support the neediest families first.
