Birch Island Restoration and Trail Project
To many families Birch Island was once a home, to naturalists it’s a mecca for bird-watching, and for children it’s a place to catch stickleback from the shoreline. The Island provides refuge to a diverse community of plants and animals even though it has endured years of degradation.
With a stewardship agreement in place, Healthy Waters Labrador is working with the Town of Happy Valley - Goose Bay, and other partners to restore unique habitat found on the Island, and create a destination for visitors to appreciate and learn about wetland ecology.
Work is well underway this fall. Phase One of the boardwalk is complete. Flow at two stream crossings will be restored with the installation of a 30' bridge and four new culverts during the month of October, along with the clean-up of debris from the shoreline.
With enough support, we plan to continue building boardwalk and viewing areas through the wetland and out to the River, create an outdoor classroom, and continue with restoration and montoring efforts.
