Reusable Bags for Marty Golden

Donation protected
UPDATE: We printed 1,200 bags in early April, and have already distributed more than half of them. At most locations, we are able to give out 100 bags in under 45 minutes!

WE HAVE EXTENDED THIS CAMPAIGN in the hope that we can print an additional 1,000 bags to distribute in our Senate District. Please consider donating!

Governor Cuomo is considering a state-wide ban on plastic bags in New York, stating that New York should lead the charge in making changes that support climate justice.

However, State Senator Marty Golden, who represents several neighborhoods in Brooklyn, opposes this shift : "It's not happening," Golden said. "You can't do that, people depend on them -- senior citizens, families. You go shopping, you need a bag."

He's right--people DO need bags--but there's no need for seniors and families in our neighborhood to "depend" on plastic when there are so many great, low-cost, reusable options.

Members of the community group Fight Back Bay Ridge have decided to help prove to Golden and the community that reusable bags are where it's at by providing free reusable bags to members of our community.

These bags will be screenprinted with #NotSoGolden, which is being used to highlight Golden's voting record in Albany, and how it harms our community. They will also contain literature about Golden's position on plastic bags that urges people to call Golden to change his position. Finally, the bags will contain a "tips and tricks" handout to help people change their habits and begin integrating reusables into their lives with more regularity.

We can purchase 1,000 bags that we will distribute free to members of our community, as well as run off the literature that the bags will contain, for only $1,000. Once the bags are purchased, we will pass them out in front of the Senator's office, at local street fairs and events, outside supermarkets, and at summertime movies in the park. These are all great areas to access members of our community who can use these bags most.

ALL MONEY DONATED will go directly to providing bags and literature to members of our community! After we reach our initial fundraising goal, if there is still demand for bags in the community, we will raise additional funds to keep the project going.

Every dollar donated results in one bag in the hands of someone in our community! Studies have shown that in a year of use, reusable bags can replace 125 plastic and 52 paper bags!

THANK YOU for your support of this project!!! Our community--and planet!--appreciate it tremendously!
