My name is Andrea Strusievici and I’m a student at the University of British Columbia, School of Kinesiology. My goal is to pursue a career in Health Care as well as contribute to my local and global community. I am very passionate about helping others and ever since I can remember I have been involved in volunteer work and leadership initiatives but this is my most exciting project yet!
On August 4th I will be embarking on a four week trip of a lifetime to Ecuador with the organization Help, Learn & Discover (HLD). I will explore the country and gain medical experience in local hospitals, but most importantly I will work on a volunteer site in the small town of Pujili.
This year the goal of the volunteer component of the HLD program is to build homes for 22 deserving and underprivileged families. The cost of each house is roughly $5,600 and it is the responsibility of each student volunteering from the months of May to August to help raise this money. It is our intention that the relief of owning a home will relieve the burden placed upon the children of these families to work instead of attending school. We hope that our help will allow these children to have the opportunity to attend school, thereby furthering their education and increasing their livelihood.
Every single penny raised goes directly to this cause. There is no middle person and absolutely no money goes to funding my trip- we (the students) raise the money, bring it to Ecuador, buy the necessary materials and help build these wonderful homes. Once in Ecuador we work alongside the families to accomplish our goals.
I encourage you to please donate to this cause! Not only will your money be taken directly to the families in need, but you will be able to see the direct result of your contribution. Upon my return, I will personally email every supporter a huge thank you and share pictures of our accomplishment!
Furthermore, if you decide to donate through the All Star Level, I will show my appreciation by sending you a small acrylic painting on canvas of an animal found in Ecuador (hand painted by me). This is an example of my art!
