Afghan Translator Moving to USA

Donation protected
The quick overview:

Najeeb is an Afghan national who served as a translator for Americans during the war in Afghanistan, putting his life and his family’s lives at risk to protect Americans.  On June 20, 2017, after a difficult, nearly two-year immigration process, Najeeb will be moving to the US with his wife and three young children! This GoFundMe campaign will provide much-needed funds to help Najeeb and his family settle into their new lives in the US. Thanks in advance for any contributions you can make — big or small!

The full background:

For the last year and a half, I have been working with Najeeb to help him obtain a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV), a particular type of visa created by Congress for Afghan and Iraqi translators who faithfully served the US and are being threatened because of their ties to the US.

A few years ago, John Oliver did a show on Afghan/Iraqi translators and the SIV program. You can find the link to that episode below. After watching this and reading about the issue in the news, I took on Najeeb's case through the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), a non-profit dedicated to helping refugees with legal assistance.  Notably, IRAP estimates that one Afghan interpreter who worked with Americans is killed every 36 hours in Afghanistan because of their ties to the US.

After nearly two years of getting the proper approvals, Najeeb and his family are scheduled to move to the US!  The amount of transitional assistance they receive will barely be enough to cover the basic necessities for a family of five. All funds raised will go directly to the family to support their immigration and integration into US life while Najeeb and his wife look for work.

During his time working for Americans in Afghanistan, Najeeb put his life and his family's lives in danger to support American goals and protect Americans in Afghanistan.  Specifically, he worked with the Poppy Seed Eradication Force, which aimed to reduce the international heroin trade. I have read several letters of recommendation and spoken to US military personnel who assured me that Najeeb helped save American lives and faithfully aided those in harm's way, while putting his own life in jeopardy.

Please find it in your heart to contribute and help Najeeb and his family with their transition to the US.  They are running from extreme danger while chasing the American dream.  After speaking with Najeeb on the phone on countless occasions, I know he is committed to finding safety for his family and to a bright future for his three young children.  His initial move to the US will be a difficult experience and every dollar helps.

Finally, if you are thinking to yourself, “Why just help Najeeb and his family? Why not help all refugees who are fleeing persecution?” Congratulate yourself for your holistic kindness and consider donating to IRAP, the legal assistance group that aims to help all refugees: https://refugeerights.org/
