Mobile Makers Lab for Disaster Relief
We have developed a vision for using our combined skills and passion to aid communities that have been devastated by natural disasters. This is the work we want to do in the world, and we need help in launching it.
Our vision is to go to areas seeking to rebuild after such a disaster, and teach people to create for themselves, using the materials at hand from a regenerating natural system. We envision a mobile workshop that is built in a shipping container, tightly designing the space with as many functions as possible. The concept is inspired by the Makers movement of collaborative work spaces full of tools. We would take this classroom/workshop where it is needed most.
The container is a unique model with doors the open up along the long wall allowing for the shop to unfold into the space around it. The workshop space, using equipment (which we already have) and solar-power
will serve as a work hub and gathering space to organize and train local citizens in the skills needed to revitalize their homes and lives. By bringing this resource to rural communities stricken by natural disasters, we will aid in both the rebuilding and providing skills that are transferable to other projects. The focus will be on sustainblity and local recources.

We are seeking funding to purchase the shipping container itself, a solar energy system w/ 10kw inverter, water filtration, FM radio station, satellite Internet and a 80'x40' inflatable relief shelter. We developed this set of functionalities based on Bell's work with the Hope Project after Hurricane Katrina. The radio station The Hope Project operated was critical for community organizing and brought people together around music and story as well as political advocacy. Their solar energy system served the community as a charging station, and the showers they offered kept people healthy. However, in the case of Katrina, the downed trees that littered the ground everywhere were all sent through a chipper because crews lacked the ability and knowledge to process them into lumber. Buildings were bulldozed instead of salvaged, requiring new outside resources that were slow to come, and sometimes never did.
With their unique skill sets, Bell and Megan together make a dynamic team. With a passion for service, and a desire to aid the road less traveled, they are choosing to live a mobile life of helping communities rebuild. Bell is a skilled craftsman and inventor with training in many different mediums and a large wealth of tools. He has spent his life as a thriving self-employed artist who creates using the natural materials from the place where he is. His tools include a full wood shop as well as metal work, fabrication, small scale wood mill, lapidary stone, leather, farm and garden, automotive, and plant medicine extraction. Megan is a permaculture teacher with a background in large event catering and event management as well as volunteer organizing. Megan currently teaches about climate change reversal and rainwater harvesting with low input agricultural systems. Both Megan and Bell are skilled at bringing community together and motivating groups to work toward a common goal. They push each other to learn more and have found a passion for teaching others together.
By becoming the resource center, with tools, education and a community gathering center, we may teach the people in our immediate sphere, but we know that the knowledge will spread, as they share what they know with others. Once the communities most pressing basic needs are met, we will teach regular classes on permaculture gardening, craftsmanship and sustainable design. Students will be able make quality items and products of the caliber for sale to high end global markets. A portion of the funds from selling the creations will go to build a workshops and tool lending libraries for use by a the collaborative community moving forward.
As climate change continues to ramp up, disasters are going to increase in frequency and intensity. While we commit to assist those devastated by these tragic disasters, we are also motivated to rebuild in a way that no longer contributes to global warming. We intend our work to stand as a blueprint for disaster rebuilding. Education in hands-on crafts and the creation of quality goods from natural materials can break the toxic cycles of exploitive industrial systems and refocus on local industry. We will use our tools to help rebuild the infrastructure and to teach a variety of crafts and skill that create value out of the materials at hand. We need your help to make this possible. Imagine the possibilities.
