My experience has taught me that walking tours are an intimate way to educate people about historic preservation. That education builds an awareness, which helps people appreciate a building’s life and history, and the distinctiveness of its architecture. They begin to understand historical buildings and become more invested in their preservation.
I want to write and produce a comprehensive walking tour guide for Queens’
Historic, venerable neighborhoods. These neighborhoods will include Richmond Hill North, Forest Hills Gardens, Douglas Manor, Hunters Point and Sunnyside. This guide would be widely available to students, handicapped people, the underserved, community groups, professional groups, those interested in preservation as well as architectural historians.
Walking Tour Guide Rationale:
This walking tour guide will be inviting, informative, and all-encompassing. It will address the different styles, characters and history of architecture in these neighborhoods. In my ten years of conducting tours in these neighborhoods, I have unearthed some interesting ways to approach helping people understand what it means to live in a historic neighborhood, and how important it is to preserve them.
Walking tour guides have nostalgia that helps open people’s eyes to the wonders before them. My tours are thought provoking and educational. We go back in time to an era that was very different than today and try to imagine what life was like back then, and how architecture played a role in that history.
I want to capitalize on the relationships that walking tours can build between people and these historic neighborhoods by producing a quality, historically accurate and captivating guide for the Queens neighborhoods that will inspire and move people toward a greater grasp of architectural preservation—and perhaps motivate them to become involved as supporters and advocates.
Resource Accessibility
The walking tour guide will be offered free of charge as a printable download resource. This could be downloaded from a variety of websites, such as the Go Fund Me, that of AIA, and perhaps those of the various Queens neighborhoods and/or history tourism sites.
Project Work Schedule and Budget
$5,000 from Go Fund Me will cover graphic artist expenses in preparing maps, illustrations and graphic descriptions. An additional $5,000 will cover professional writers to research and write about the neighborhoods and structures, and I will incur printing cost of $5,000 to produce the first printing of 500 copies of the booklet. The majority of the cost is in design, content and production.
