Since January 2009, Pastor Lisa Deneen Gorman, an elder in the United Methodist Church, has poured her time, energy and soul into the lives of the childeren and families in her hometown of Benton Harbor, Michigan.
Currently, Pastor Gorman is the Executive Director of Lighthouse Ministries of Benton Harbor. She along with her assistant, and a host of volunteers run 11 programs for for the families in her community.
In 2015, Lisa wants to extend the minstry's reach by fixing up a nearby home, for her 8-year-old daughter and herself to live in. "For me, when I go home, ministry does not turn off, because that's who I am," she said. It's important for her to live and invest in the community that loved and nurtured her as a child and young adult.
The neighborhood in which she serves and plans on living in is filled with drugs, prostitution, blighted houses and underserved children who need a safe space to learn, grow and thrive!
She has already repaired the foundation, replaced the windows, and had the interior stripped down to the studs. "Because of the lack of gutters and the black mold present it became necessary to take down the sheetrock and remediate the mold.
During the renovations of her house, robbers made off with 2 furnances, exsiting plumbing and electrical supplies leaving Pastor Gorman unable to finish the much needed repairs.
"I am unable to get a loan to finish the much needed repairs at this present time because I have what banks call a "negative collateral and the money I had used to purchase those items now stolen are gone."
The repair work has slowed to a crawl due the lack of money and help. Several weeks ago, a contractor agreed to help out after hearing my story. He has agreed to do the work for FREE, but I must come up with the cost of the materials before May 30th.
"We've set a Big goal," Pastor Gorman says, "but we serve a Bigger God!" "Any amount" she says; "would be appreciative in helping us to make our house a home."
