Katie's Volunteering in Vietnam

Hello, my name is Katie Wells. I am currently saving money for a volunteer trip to Vietnam. I will be in Ho Chi Mihn City for 3 months total (mid-April to mid-July, 2015). I have been considering to do volunteer work for about a year now, and I feel very strongly that this is a good time in my life to go out and do it. My heart somehow told me I should go to Vietnam, and I plan to follow that feeling in hopes that I can help the lives of the children I meet there.
As I'm sure you already know, Vietnam has had a tragic history and a devastating amount of Vietnam civilians are still currently being affected by the war. Agent Orange is still damaging many innocent peoples' lives by causing a large range of birth defects in children. Most children cannot get the proper medical attention they need because their parents simply cannot afford it. Often times, the parents are forced to leave the children in orphanges to give them some type of surviving chance. Currently in my program (IVHQ) alone, there are around 600 children at the orphanges and unfortunately about 240 of them have some type of disability. Reading that large number of children made my heart sink. I only hope I can meet at least one child and make them feel that someone cares for them.

Here is a documentary that inspired me to choose Vietnam specifically over many countries. It's a very special story about a British woman and a Vietnamese boy. I hope my volunteer trip will give me this type of opportunity as well.
I am not going on a vacation. I am going to Vietnam because I want to make these children smile.
