Summary: Daisy had been acting sick for a while, dealing with a variety of infections— ear infection, eye infection, pancreatitis. After an ultrasound revealed a large abdominal mass, we noticed just a day or few after that her gums were pale, her abdomen was swollen, and she could hardly stand. We rushed her to the vet and found out that Daisy had renal hemangiosarcoma, a form of malignant tumor found in the blood vessels. Her tumor ruptured, causing internal bleeding. The vets performed emergency surgery to remove the tumor as well as her right kidney (nephrectomy). Daisy is our little furry warrior, and managed to beat all the odds!
We received an initial estimate of around 4-6k, which we agreed to because it seemed reasonable and not too difficult to fund. But the bill kept growing. We had to borrow money, use all the credit we could, and I even used thousands from my college fund to help out. We need to meet with an oncologist to discuss chemo for Daisy, but it's difficult because we would need to pay off this current bill first.
Any contribution, large or small, is so greatly appreciated. We want to thank everyone who has donated or shared so far— it means more than we can put into words.
Daisy's full story:
Daisy Belle Muddypaws is a 12-year-old Golden Retriever. Daisy loves going for walks, laying on the beach, and eating chicken. Daisy is part of a big family-- her mom and dad and 4 siblings (all human). She's a tough pup, and battled renal hemangiosarcoma. She's recovering from a nephrectomy.
Daisy was a happy, completely healthy dog, but we knew something was wrong when she suddenly stopped eating. Daisy had an ear infection, then an eye infection, and then was diagnosed with pancreatitis. But after weeks of medicine and diet changes, Daisy still wasn't back to her normal, fun-loving, chicken-eating self.
Daisy was scheduled for an ultrasound just last week to find out why she wasn't getting better. The ultrasound revealed an abdominal mass, about 4x3 inches, located near her adrenal glands. It is displacing her right kidney, and there is fluid accumulating in her abdominal cavity. The ultrasound located the mass, but could not see if it was connected to her adrenal glands or any arteries. A CT scan had to be scheduled to see if it was operable, but Daisy deteriorated quickly.
Just last night, July 19th, Daisy's stomach was bloated, she was unable to stand, and she refused food, treats, and water. We rushed Daisy to the only available vet over an hour away for an emergency CT scan, the cost of which is currently (on the low end) $2833.
At the time of writing, July 20th, Daisy's CT scan results are pending. She is currently being treated inside the animal hospital and we have just been hit with the first medical bill. We estimate the total cost of treatment to be around $10,000. If the CT scan reveals the tumor is operable, (update: it was operable! Daisy had a nephrectomy, which is the removal of the kidney. The tumor was removed successfully) the goal will be updated with the exact total cost of treatment as soon as we know it (now updated with complete cost).
We are struggling to afford Daisy's treatment. Three of Daisy's human siblings are in college, and her parents run a small business. My siblings and I were very young when we got Daisy (~3, 6, 8, and 11) and we don't know what life is like without her. She is still so full of life and energy and we know it's not her time just yet.
Please help with Daisy's medical bills. Any contribution, large or small, is so greatly appreciated. If you are unable to donate (that is absolutely okay), please consider sharing this GoFundMe. Thank you so much.
