 PROTECT NATURAL COMMUNITY GREENSPACE

We are thrilled to be presented with the opportunity of a lifetime; the final chance to protect a last remaining urban nature space in perpetuity and for generations to come!

For nearly 70 years, hundreds of residents from across the CRD, including patients, staff and visitors of the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria Hospice and the BC Cancer Agency, have walked, biked, commuted, played, rested and escaped the bustle of urban life within the 6 acre natural community greenspace at 1843 Kings Road, located in the Saanich Panhandle and connected via pathway to the Royal Jubilee Hospital.

Generations of community members have fought since the 1960s to fully protect this land, citing repeatedly it’s significance as the last remaining urban natural space in the region. Home to owls and urban wildlife, this incredible urban forest is a place where children, adults and animals can access nature, historic orchard trees, a forested retreat, and where Bowker Creek can thrive untouched by development.

In January 2019, Saanich acquired the greenspace from BC Hydro for 5.5 million. Saanich has contributed 2.75M to the acquisition and a group of community members are fundraising the remaining 2.75M via the Saanich Legacy Foundation, through means of grants, personal donations and requests for contributions from local, provincial and federal government agencies.

As we continue to densify rapidly, it is imperative that we protect our remaining urban nature space for human and environmental health and sustainability. 100 years from now, we envision a restored and thriving natural community greenspace, with enhanced and strengthened local ecosystem, and the reestablished historical land use, including:

- A wheelchair accessible pathway from the Royal Jubilee Hospital, providing access and restorative healing benefits of nature to even more patients and visitors of our regional hospital.

- Restored native species and tree canopy, camas meadow, forest restoration.

- Historic orchard trees rejuvenated and additional plantings, and the establishment of community gardens on a small portion of the land.

- Cathedral tree walk extended around the full perimeter of the park.

- Fully restored Bowker Creek Watershed within Kings Park and through the St. Patrick’s Diocese Land connecting to the hospital grounds.

Please help us achieve our goal, and leave a legacy for generations and hundreds of years to come!
