Ms. Janet was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a hematologic (blood) cancer, that develops in the bone marrow. It is the second most commmon blood cancer and formed by malignant plasma cells. Normal plasma cells are found in the bone marrow and are an important part of the immune system.
She is currently going through chemotherapy treatments twice a week. Chemo drugs kill cancer cells but also can damage normal cells. In multiple myeloma, the overgrowth of plasma cells in the bone marrow can crowd out normal blood-forming cells, leading to low blood counts. This can cause anemia — a shortage of red blood cells. People with anemia become pale, weak, and fatigued. Multiple myeloma can also cause the level of platelets in the blood to become low (called thrombocytopenia). This can lead to increased bleeding and bruising. Another condition that can develop is leukopenia — a shortage of normal white blood cells. This can lead to problems fighting infections.
For those who don't know Ms. Janet, she relocated from England 42 years ago and worked in New York for 23 years. Janet moved to Tampa in 2003 and went back to college. She started employment at the University of South Florida in 2005 and continues to serve as the Athletic Insurance Supervisor in the Sports Medicine department. She is a single mother of one.

As many who know her would attest, Ms. Janet is the most caring, selfless person in the world. She likes to bring sunshine to the lives of others. She is the first person to be there if you ever need help. She loves kids and goes out of her way to make them happy. Janet does volunteer work helping children and teaches Sunday school classes at her local church. She is always collecting donations for abused and neglected children. Ms. Janet is a strong mother figure to everyone and is surrounded by a close-knit group of family and friends. We will come together and give her love, support, and inspiration. LET'S HELP MS.
