Some BIG things are happening in the case and I’m so excited to share!
Recently, we have been fighting NW Cryobank over my right to serve as my daughter’s legal representative in court. NW opposed my petition by filing a document authored by one of their contracted psychologists. This person suggests that it is NOT in the best interest of donor conceived minors to undergo DNA testing - testing that is used to find out information early on about their heritage, medical background and to establish connections with half siblings. It is their opinion that I have a "conflict of interest" in representing my own child because I used DNA testing so I may be better equipped to address her medical needs and unique curiosities. NW argues that dishonesty and secrecy are necessary to protect my daughter’s “future adult-autonomy.” This biased opinion contradicts years of studies and consensus within the community and it is a huge slap in the face to the donor conceived persons that have fought these lies for years. I am absolutely disgusted by the depths NW will go to to protect their profitability. Their statements are offensive and incorrect and they need to be legally challenged.
NW’s claim is that DNA testing, with/without genetic relative matching (matching is necessary to find 1/2 siblings), is an attempt to discover information about the donor. My daughter is NOT 1/2 donor. Zoe was born a whole and completely unique human being and she sure as heck isn’t on lease to a business for 18 years. All donor conceived people are deserving of the same basic human rights, dignity and bodily integrity as you and I. She has the right to every bit of information contained within the cells of her body, no matter what that may reveal, no matter her age and no matter the method by which she was conceived. ✊✊
BIG NEWS TIME:
After nearly a year of tireless work (by my attorney), tears (by me), and desperate pleadings with the universe... The lawsuit is now being supported by a team of powerful social justice oriented people!! They are enthusiastically backing the cause and giving us the resources necessary to see the case through the court system so we may have a chance to create the precedent that we, as a community, deserve.
HOLY. MOLY. This is huge!
We have been given an opportunity to provoke change in a totally unregulated billion dollar industry that has disenfranchised so many people just like my daughter. We have tackled our biggest hurdle of finding legal backing and now the only thing standing in our way is funding. So, here I am, graciously asking for your support so the case can continue to move forward. Would you consider helping cover local lawyer fees and expenses associated with court appearances? You all have been a tremendous support in the past and I am forever grateful. There’s no way we would have made it this far without the outpouring of support we’ve received over the past year.
