India "Half the Sky" Service Projects

In August, a group of twenty-three University of Washington students are traveling to various locations in India to learn about the role of women in leadership and entrepreneurship. With an interest in India, leadership, and making a positive difference in the world, we will work on three service projects to gain a deeper understanding of the work, and the lives of the people.
Product Development: The Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) Gitanjali Cooperative provides very, very low-income waste pickers with an alternative livelihood of manufacturing products from recycled garbage. The UW group will provide ideas and fund the development of at least one new craft product.
Rainwater Harvesting: Biome Trust is an organization that builds rainwater tanks in rural areas to provide villages with clean drinking water. Groundwater in much of India is contaminated with high levels of fluoride and lead, but through education and the installation of the tanks, people are safer and healthier.
Educational Center: The successful micro-finance institution Grameen Koota (GK), the GK Hippocampus Learning Centres offer rural children affordable, quality education. They also provide teacher education and leadership opportunities for local women.
Our goal is to raise at least $6000 to fund these projects by August 10th to fund these projects. Your donation in any amount is welcome and sincerely appreciated. Thank you for helping us change lives.
