**UPDATE** As indicated in updates posted throughout this process, Meydi was released from federal custody on February 13, 2020. The journey is not over, though, as we continue through the court system to fight to get Meydi granted asylum here in the US. The support we have received has been amazing and so encouraging to us. We are truly grateful. As the fight is not over, I did change our goal amount for this page. All the money raised is used to support Meydi now that she is out of jail and our continuing fight for her to stay in the USA.
About 16 months ago, Meydi Guzman Rivas fled her native Honduras due to violence and fears for her safety to seek refuge in the United States with her father. She is a senior at Crystal Lake Central High School and was on track to graduate in May, 2020. Meydi and her father were seeking asylum and going through the court process, but the government alleges they missed a court date last February. When they appeared in court a few days later, the case was given a continuance until October. When they returned to court for their hearing (shortly after Meydi turned 18 ), ICE agents were waiting for them and took them into custody. Hours after initially meeting with the attorneys we found to work on her case, Meydi was transferred in the middle of the night (at 1:41 am) to an ICE detention center in southern Illinois, far away from those of us who know her and love her. This fund will be used to fiercely fight for Meydi’s freedom and to get her back to Crystal Lake and the life she deserves and out of the orange jump suit she is currently wearing. Meydi's Power of Attorney, Sara, and I will ensure that all money is used for Meydi. Right now we are concerned with getting her money on her inmate account so she can stay as connected as possible and make phone calls from jail. She will also be able to purchase items in the jail with the money on her inmate account. In addition, money will be used for any legal fees that are encountered as well as to post bond, when that day comes. This is a new process for many of us trying to help Meydi. With your kind donations, we will be ready for any expenses that come up during this process.
