WHAT IS THE CAUSE?
First, I hope sharing my story and journey will help others be more aware of the danger, and also shed light on the challenges of trauma and Mental Health. However, if people wish to provide additional support, proceeds raised from the ongoing Light Up The Dark initiatives will go towards The Canadian Mental Health Association and Jack.org. I cannot thank you enough for your support!
WHY DID WE START THIS LIGHT UP THE DARK INITIATIVE?
For me, running with a blindfold symbolizes what it can feel like battling with Mental Health; alone, consumed by your thoughts, and surrounded by darkness. I hope this initiative will raise awareness of Mental Health by helping others know they are not alone, and inspire them to keep fighting to find their light.
After everything I've experienced, it broke my heart to know I am probably not the only one feeling lost and desperately needing help. It is extremely overwhelming, exhausting and discouraging to search for help. For example, it took me over a year just to find a reliable therapist. Seeking professional help has saved my life. Following my run and with your help, www.lightupthedark.ca will become a safe space for people to learn helpful healing tools, share their stories and speak directly to someone who has walked in their shoes. Everyone is facing their own battle, however, no one should have to do it alone.
