The US/Mexico border is one of the most drastic borders of economic contrast in the world. Located a matter of feet across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Ciudad Juarez is riddled with violence and extreme poverty. Many of the residents have limited options for work or education; many turn to violence or the drug industry in order to survive or feed their families.
However, Centro Santa Catalina is an organization which provides hope and help to economically poor women, children and families in Ciudad Juarez. It was founded in 1996 for the empowerment of economically poor women and for the welfare of their families.
They have several children's school programs and a sewing cooperative which enables women to earn income from selling handmade goods-

Inside the sewing co-op-
The center provides a safe environment where women have the chance to build community, engage in personal/spiritual development and gain income by producing and selling Mexican-style textiles through their sewing co-operative. Some of the products which are made include aprons, shawls, bags and table cloths. The income gained from the sale of these items help the women to feed their families; for some it is the only income they have to support their households. The average wage is around $80-150/month. These women work hard to keep their families together in Mexico.
The center is located in Colonia Panfilo Natera, a marginal colonia located on what was once the Juarez municipal garbage dump-
The people living in the Colonia Panfilo Natera and the surrounding colonias, for the most part, are newly migrated from the central parts of Mexico. They represent the "underside of globalization." They migrated to Juarez seeking jobs in international factories called maquiladoras for minimal wages ranging from $3.70 a day to $5.00 a day. They live either in cardboard shacks or simple one- to two-room cinder block houses. Though the area now has some sewer and water services as well as electricity not all homes have access. Garbage pick-up is minimal.
The center depends completely on donations to exisit. There are no funds from the Mexico or US governments, nor from the institutional church.
