1. Raise awareness of Japan’s use of the Rising Sun Flag #RisingSunflag during the upcoming 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan and
2. To pressure the International Olympic Committee and Japan to ban the use of this flag during the Olympics.
Who we are
Our organization is called Chosun Righteous Brotherhood Memorial Society (in Korean 조선의열단기념사업회) and I am the organization president Mr. Won Wung Kim (김원웅). Why is it so wrong to use the Rising Sun Flag?
The Rising Sun flag is a symbol of Japanese imperialism and aggression. Japan has historically used this flag during wartime when it warred and conquered many countries.
It was used during the Russo-Japanese war of 1904, the brutal colonization of Korea from 1910 - 1945, to even attacks on the US during World War II at Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Midway. You can see this flag in the recently released movie Midway - https://youtu.be/BfTYY_pac8o
The Japanese forcibly occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945, where they tortured, raped, murdered, and pillaged the entire Korean peninsula. Japanese imperialism extended beyond Korea to other Asian countries like China and the Philippines, where the Japanese committed numerous war crimes such as massacres, genocides, sexual slavery and rape of women and young girls, human experimentation, infringement of basic human rights… the list goes on.
The Rising Sun Flag is a reminder of this horrid brutality that was experienced by Koreans and their Asian neighbors. 10 MILLION innocent civilians lives were destroyed.
So for Asian people, the Rising Sun Flag is the same as the Nazi Germany’s Hakenkreuz (Swastika) is to the Jewish population. It symbolizes evil, hate, murder and suffering. In Europe, the use of the Nazi flag is forbidden by law today. However, the Japanese Ground and Maritime Self-Defense Forces continue to use the Rising Sun flag as their military flag. The bigger problem is that this flag is used in everyday life, such as in clothing and in packaging. Like the Hakenkruez, this flag should never be used in fashion or in everyday life for that matter.
Germany has apologized for the use of the Nazi flag and the past sufferings it has caused from it. However, Japan has yet to make any formal apology.
And now Japan plans to use the Rising Sun Flag as their “national” flag during the 2020 Summer Olympics, similar to how the Nazi’s used the Hakenkreuz during the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
This is unacceptable.
Japan’s use of this flag clearly violates Rule/Article 50 of the Olympic Charter which states: “No kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas.”
