OPTION Service Trip To Nicaragua

Donation protected
In my sixth, and final, year in the Doctoral Physical Therapy Program, I have been offered an amazing opportunity to travel to Leon, Nicaragua for Quinnipiac's OPTION service trip. In January 2015, 18 physical and occupational therapy students from QU will travel to the surrounding communities of Leon, Nicaragua. The goals of this healthcare delegation are to introduce students to the realities of healthcare in Nicaragua while providing much needed service to Nicaraguan natives.

The average Nicaraguan family earns just $910 annually, and 1/3 of the children never enroll in elementary school, do not attend, or drop out before reaching the 6th grade. Hospital wards are overcrowded and often there are not enough beds and/or sheets for patients; often times two or more patients must share a portion of the bed. Individuals living with disabilities often never leave their homes due to the stigma associated with disabilty and the tremendous difficulties they face when negotiating overcrowded and uneven sidewalks in the community.

There is a great need for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and general medical supplies. By providing needed services, our delegation hopes to not only gain an understanding of the disparities that exist, but more importantly offer a sense of community and comfort when providing needed care and services to the Nicaraguan natives. I'd like to take this opportunity to ask for your support. Any donation, big or small, is greatly appreciated (they are also tax deductable). Donations will go directly to my trips cost, which will include airfare, transportation, and additional supplies that will be used in the homes and clinics I will be working in. Such supplies include: wheelchairs, commodes, walkers, sheets, toys for the children and patients in the hospital. Any contribution will be of great help for our delegations efforts.

Again, I cannot adequately express my gratitude and thanks to all those who are making this trip possible for me-- it means the world!
