Why make a donation to crowdfund The Information Project: Development in Crystal Palace Park?

Together we are strong as a community and we need to know more about what is happening in our park. We also need to let everyone know what is going on in our community and give local people a voice in this process.

What is The Information Project?
The Information Project: Development in Crystal Palace Park is an independent information resource being developed by local residents to inform other residents and interested parties about the proposed development in Crystal Palace park by the Chinese corporation ZhongRong Group (ZRG) and their UK partners Arup. This deal would mean the sale of the top site of the park, Metropolitan Open Land, by Bromley Council on a long lease to ZRG. The development was announced by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, during a press conference in Crystal Palace park in October 2013.

At present there are no details about what the proposed building on this site would look like and there is no confirmed information about what the building will hold. Presently there is no central resource point where the public can find out about the project.

This is concerning as it may mean that local people cannot make a well-informed decision about the proposed development when the planning application is made. There is also much concern about the speed of the process and its lack of transparency amongst local residents and community groups. At the time of writing ZRG and Arup have said that they want to make this application by autumn 2014.

What does the project want to achieve?
There has been a small amount community engagement activity by Arup on behalf of ZRG. But the team behind the project are concerned that many people do not know about the proposed land deal or are aware of the issues around the process so far, especially those who are not online or involved in local community groups. The project aims to:

- raise awareness amongst the local community and surrounding areas of the proposed deal
- create an online resource where key documents and links to information on the sale are published
- provide updates on the project
- publish blogs, news articles and other informative and opinion pieces
- encourage debate on the questions surrounding the sale of Metropolitan Open Land and the proposed development
- empower local people to get involved in debating the issues and having a say in what happens to the park.

What will your donation fund?
The project will consist of various activities to raise awareness and encourage debate:

- a series of debates on the issues surrounding the suitable uses of urban parkland eg culture, heritage, placeshaping
Estimated cost - £150 per debate x 3 events = £450

- a blog which publishes key documents and links to other sources of information and opinions, with a latest news update for subscribers
Estimated cost "“ all the work will be done in kind by volunteers

- a flyer and poster campaign to publicise the blog and debates
Estimated cost
15,000 A5 flyers - £300
200 posters - £100
