Leif and Gail have been committed to doing volunteer work since they met over 11 years ago. Africa has always been the dream destination for them because of the sheer raw need of this continent. Furthermore, their desires to make an impact fueled their college degrees. Leif attended UC Davis and UC Berkeley for his BS, MS in civil and environmental engineering with a focus on water and restoration, while Gail got an RN, BSN in nursing and community health. The time has finally come for them to set out on a journey of a lifetime to bring positive changes to communities in great need.
Their trip begins on June 1st, 2014 when we will take a one way flight to Africa. Starting in the country of Zambia in a small village near Kabwe, we will be working with GAP Community on a $18,500 project of building a well and sinking a borehole, building a classroom and houses for teachers, as well as providing a mobile clinic in the community where they have none of these. When this project is finished, we are heading to a small town near the coast of Liberia called Grand Cape Mount to work with C3 Medical Volunteer Organization at the only hospital in this community. This hospital servicing a community of 135,000 currently has 2-3 doctors, very limited staff and NO RUNNING WATER. Leif will be taping into the underground water sources, making sure it is clean and running it into the hospital; while Gail will be working to save lives in this under staffed and under equipped community. We will have a more accurate estimation of the cost after a project assessment which is taking place at the end of April, but equipment and supplies could easily cost over $20,000. The hospital is also currently trying to raise funds to buy an ambulance, since they do not have one, and are always in need for funds for medical supplies, equipment and life saving medication. At this point, they often do not have the funds to perform many needed surgeries because they don't have money for anesthesia and paralytic medications.
Once this project is complete, we will see where the road takes us. There are so many other communities in need and projects to be worked on which could greatly benefit from our stills so we plan on playing it by ear but will likely be spending between eight and eighteen months working for free in Africa.
