Tohoku earthquake recovery volunteerism

My students
My students, members of Japanese National Honor Society (JNHS) are always thinking of ways to volunteer and help fellow students at sister schools in Japan. Members of JNHS are planning to visit Japan in Summer 2014 to continue with their efforts in building better lives for students that were affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. Since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan, JNHS members have raised relief funds for various causes and visited Tohoku as volunteers in cleanup efforts. They have raised over $13,000 in a relief fund and donated the funds to one of their sister schools, located in Miyagi, Japan, where potable heaters for the winter, display cases, and school supplies were purchased, after they were all destroyed by the earthquake. Members want to continue with their efforts of volunteerism and social awareness of living conditions of the people in the surrounding areas that are still living in temporary housing, those suffering from "post traumatic stress" and for fellow students trying to achieve their education.
They have held school-wide events, fundraisers, visiting senior citizen housing in Japan, community cleanup efforts and hosting students from Tohoku, providing support both financially and emotionally. My students just wish to continue with helping students in Japan and believe that all people need help when tragedy strikes, in order to bring a balance back to their lives.
My projects
Sixteen of my George Washington High School students will visit Japan for their cultural excursion and volunteerism in Summer 2014. As a part of their trip, they will visit Tohoku for their volunteer services, supporting Tohoku and the community, bringing relief funds that they raised in 2013 (approximately $３000). All the students are responsible for the entire costs for their trip, but they need help in reducing their cost. They are in need of funds to cover ground transportations in Japan such as tickets for airport limousine buses and a bullet train from Tokyo to Sendai, Tohoku. It is important for them to reach this area of Japan to participate in community efforts, visiting the elderly that are left alone and to raise awareness in students that feel isolated that they are not alone.
