Arbor Day is a special day that is set aside to raise awareness of trees and the important role that they play in our environment. While the quintessential arbor day activity of planting trees has countless benefits to the environment, there is also an almost spiritual act of planting a delicate sapling on suited ground and providing the appropriate care, so that it will have a chance to grow and benefit the world. The initial care saplings receive in Arbor Day is especially critical, as adaptation phase is when they are most susceptible to hostile environment, until they put down roots and become self-sufficient.
However, as Arbor Day is observed, we at Blue Tulip Human Rights Center would like to bring your attention to much more delicate beings that are living under harsh conditions. More than 700 babies are forced to live in prisons in Turkey, due to regime’s practice of mass arrests and long pretrial periods.
To make matters worse, these babies are not even accounted under the prison system and therefore are not even allocated beds or sustenance, let alone other needs. Mothers are forced to care for their babies in non-hygienic overcrowded prison cells, devoid of even the most basic necessities. Although, Turkish laws prohibits arrest of mothers with newborns until six months old without sentencing, this is disregarded by the practitioners of the judicial system that has lost independence and impartiality long ago. This is also against the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
As the Blue Tulip family, we aspire to observe the Arbor Day and plant 700 trees in the name of 700 babies living in prisons of Turkey. Just as the trees we planted grow, so will our hope for a better world and our resolve to be the voice of those who are oppressed and silenced.
