Alzheimer's Association

I am attempting to raise $4,000 for Alzheimer's research and awareness. This is a challenge I have made to myself over the past 3 years after years of watching my grandmother's struggles with the disease. My Nana was diagnosed over 12 years ago, and I remember how emotionally challenging and overwhelming this diagnoses was on her and my family. Over the past 12 years, I have observed the curse of this disease. I have seen a smart, strong, witty, and beautiful woman slowly lose her grasp on reality. She has lost all the things that made her happy... her memories, recognizing her family, playing cards, enjoying animated and fun conversation. She has simply lost herself. It is devastating as a family member, as a grandchild, to witness; and it has been overwhelming and awe-inspiring to watch my mother become her mother's mother. PLEASE help me fight to find a treatment, and more importantly a CAUSE and a CURE.

OUR MISSION: To eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Today, an American develops Alzheimer's disease every 68 seconds. In 2050, an American will develop the disease every 33 seconds, or 13.8 million Americans. Alzheimer's is the only top 10 leading cause of death in America that remains ambiguous. The underlying cause is still unknown, which makes treating the disease a struggle, but the Alzheimer's Association is working diligently, and making progress, at identifying symptoms, potential causes, treatments and continued care. A secondary victim to Alzheimer's is the caregiver with 80% of care provided in the community being provided by unpaid caregivers.

By the numbers...
An estimated 5.2 MILLION Americans have Alzheimer's.
Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death in the US.
One in 3 Seniors dies with Alzheimer's or dementia.
15.4 MILLION caregivers providing 17.5 BILLION hours of unpaid care.
Care of the disease is valued at $216.4 BILLION, more than 8x the total sales of McDonald's in 2011.
