Niko's Redemption

Donation protected
After seeing a post on Facebook about a dog that was hit and dragged by a car in Hernando County, a follower reached out to us.  He was scheduled to be euthanized on November 25th because he had what was thought to be a fractured pelvis.

We immediately wanted to help, but we knew it was more than we could afford due to several similar cases we had recently.

We were quoted $2000 for the surgery for a fractured pelvis and sent out an SOS.  Our friend Nick Borgesano, owner of Kegenix, immediately offered to cover the cost of his medical expenses.

Once he entered our facility, his new life began. This also meant he should be given a name. Since Kegenix has sponsored his surgery to repair his fractured pelvis, we felt they should be given the honor.  They decided on the name, "Niko"

Niko's x-rays indicate that he has a fractured vertebrae. which is compressing his spine causing paralysis. Upon further examination of the x-rays, we were shocked at what we saw........... TWO BULLETS!!

Niko was scheduled with a Neurologist to see if his nerve was severed and if he was permanently paralyzed.

Blue Pearl shows that Niko has a fracture to the L7 vertebrae, the last one before the sacrum. Luckily it's not affecting the spinal cord proper, rather a nerve root that's located nearby.

Good: It's not spinal cord, so the injury won't affect his ability to urinate/defecate.

Bad: If the fracture shifts it could render him permanently paralyzed.

The Neurologist recommends surgery using an external fixation device to stabilize the vertebrae, protecting the nerve bundles and allowing the fracture to heal properly. Pins would be placed in the uninjured vertebrae proximal to the fracture, those pins would be attached to the external fixation device.

The estimate of Niko's surgery is $5,000.  Since we have already received $2,000 from Kegenix, we are seeking additional funding for the remaining balance of $3,000.

Despite being hit and dragged by a car, and shot TWICE, he is the sweetest guy that just wants affection.  We know that once he has this surgery, and recovers, his new life is going to be amazing.
