Peruvian Medical Project

I am a fourth year student doctor studying at the University of Leeds, preparing to undertake a medical project in Peru this coming summer. I will be part of a volunteer medical team running a health post in Quisaur for 6 weeks in the Andean Cordillera Blanca region of Peru.

We will be providing desperately needed medical care to very poor people who do not have access to any conventional medical services. We will also run a mobile medical clinic, trekking to remote villages where the healthcare needs are varied. We expect to provide vaccinations, treat skin disease, wounds, infections, paediatric (children's) illness, gynaecological problems and eye problems.

The project is part of Light Education Development, a volunteer led Registered Charity providing assistance to people in Peruvian mountain villages (www.lighteducationdevelopment.org).

The conditions will be tough. We will be trekking and camping in the mountains and working at an altitude of between 4000-5000m above sea level. Temperatures will fall well below freezing at night.

The team is self-funded, which is a particular challenge for me as a student doctor bearing the costs of five years of university fees. I estimate the trip will cost me personally £3300 for transport, equipment and medical supplies.
