Nathalie-Volunteer Philippines Disaster

Hi everyone,

As some of you may already know, for months now I've talked about volunteering overseas. A few days ago I decided to go to the Philippines to volunteer and help local people affected by the unfortunate recent natural disasters. Bohol is one of the devastated islands in the Philippines that was not only effected by the recent typhoon, but a month earlier was struck by an earthquake.

To take the time out of our comfortable lives and try to comprehend what they're going through is so difficult - we are so busy with our own problems and concerns. But when you hear about something like this, it's a reminder we are truly lucky and there are people that face unbelievable struggles without choice. They've lost everything - not only the comforts of home and a roof over their head, but the simple needs of survival that we take for granted - thirsty for the simple need of clean water and starving for days without food. Beyond everyday survival, the hardest factor to comprehend is the emotional struggles that lay ahead - the nightmares to come and the challenge to regain their self dignity. Most importantly the family and friends, parents and children they've lost and will never see again.

Just imagine for a moment losing so much - personally I cannot morally turn a blind eye. That's why I've decided to take time out of what would normally be my peak party season, including New Years, and give my time to people who need it most.

I'll be spending 10 days camping in Bohol-working with the All Hands team on the demolition and reconstruction of homes. I'm expecting this project to be extremely challenging both physically and emotionally- but I have the passion, determination and support of a fantastic organisation to carry me through.

Some of you are skeptical of donations sent to aid groups - the advantage of contributing to my cause is knowing that I will be there personally helping those in need. I am aiming to raise $2400 to fund my flights and basic necessities whilst volunteering over 10 days. Anything leftover will go straight to the All Hands Group which will help fund materials and support necessary for this project.
