Last August, a sympathetic but professionally distant doctor sat down with my family to explain what was making my son, Jason Murphy, ill. My son inherited a genetic deficiency that spared him in infancy only to rob him of his health as an adult. The genetic disorder which destroyed his liver is Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency for which the only cure is a liver transplant. We embarked on the long process of adding Jason to the transplant list and obtaining temporary disability to cover his transplant surgery. However, transplant recovery is a long and arduous journey that will require us to be close to his transplant hospital, Piedmont in Atlanta. Jason's Medicaid will end a year after his transplant but his anti-rejection medication is a lifelong commitment and he is not guaranteed insurance coverage after his Medicaid ends.
