The Family
Like many families in Tacloban the Fabella's of Barangay 48-A have lost everything to the Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). May Joy's mother (Margie Fabella), brothers (Marvin and Mark Fabella) and sisters (Marjorie, Rose Marie, and Rachel) survived. However, sadly, May Joy's grandmother Nanay Saling and aunt Rebecca did not survive. They both lived next door to May Joy's immediate family.

The Home
There are many pictures being shown of the disaster and destroyed buildings. While we don't have a picture of the current state of their home, we know it has been destroyed.

The Wall Street Journal has a good graphic showing a before and after view of the area near the convention center. The road to the left of the convention center is Esperas Avenue. The Fabella's home was between this road and the ocean about a mile up Esperas (to the left)

Latest News from Family:
We have only had a brief message from Rose using the 3 min free internet at Tacloban city hall. The message simply said that they were ok, that Nanay Saling and Aunt Rebecca had died, that they had lost everything and that they were planning to travel to Catarman in Northern Samar to stay with relatives. That is a 214 mile journey. This was Monday night EST (Tuesday morning in the Philippines).
Reason for this campaign:
Many of our friends and family have been asking us how they can help. What can they do. It was one of them that actually suggested this site to us. We discussed this one night and decided to try this.
Why, well right now they need immediate help. We guess they have only the cloths they were wearing. Once they are settled and safe, we can wire them money for food and immediate basic needs like a change of clothing and toiletries. Then continue to support them as time passes. So we do not need this site for that reason.
However, they have lost everything. They have to rebuild their home and replace all the furnishings. This is where we and they will need your help.
Some of our friends and family have offered spare furnishings and to buy clothing for them. We can help facilitate this, but realize, it takes 8-10 weeks to ship a 2'x2'x3' box to the Philippines from Massachusetts and costs $70. Also the cost of goods in the Philippines can be much less that here in the U.S. Hence money can be the easiest and best help. But if you do have items you want to donate, just talk to us and we can decide how best to proceed.
Now how did I, Roy, come up with a goal amount of $16,000? I quizzed May Joy about what their monthly expenses were (food, utilities, housing), create a monthly estimate of about $450 to support May Joy's immediate family, and then guessed that it would take about three years worth of monthly expenses to rebuild and replace. [$450 * 36 = $16,200]
One final piece of information for everyone. Do realize that while this website does not cost us, the Martin family, any money to keep up, the website and money processor take an 8% cut of all money raised through the site. I.e. for every $100 raised, only $92 will go to the Fabella family. Consider it an ease of donations tax. However if you want %100 of your money to go to the Fabella's, we will accept and process ourselves any checks you mail or hand us.
