Run for APCA orphanage

I'm running the Angkor Empire marathon on August 17 and have been asked if I am running for charity. You hear a lot about the poverty, begging, and in particular, the orphans in Cambodia and often its hard to know just how to help. By competing in the marathon, I have the opportunity to not only fulfil a personal goal of mine, but also help those less fortunate than we are.
Our friend Marc is actively involved with the APCA orphanage, so this was a perfect choice. The photo shown is from our friend's last visit.
I'm asking friends and family members to pledge a certain amount, to be paid on the completion of the marathon. Any small amount will help. It will be an added incentive to get across that finishing line!

Some info on APCA from Marc:
· Currently there are around 100 children on the books. The recent capacity was 75, but the Government has insisted on the orphanage taking more children.
· We’ve been involved now for over 5 years, mainly raising funds and funding some of the works from our own pocket.
· The orphanage is run by a guy called Dara Sim, he’s been doing it for around 10 years, he was a peace keeper with the UN for a while. Essentially he is the lynch pin for the orphanage and often the only constant the kids have in their eyes. Frankly I’m not sure how he does it!
· Dara’s main aim at the moment is:
o To be self sustaining (when I first went up there we brought ½ ton of rice – he had 3 bags in store – about 2 days supply), Dara is a self taught agriculturist and he actively teaches the children. Though donations he grows mushrooms for protein (and sale), raises catfish and ducks. They have a vege garden as well
o Each child must study every day, he sends them to local schools and teaches them himself, he believes English is very important for their future employment, so all the kids have English classes before school (reading and writing).
o One of the dilemmas at the moment is some of the kids are getting to 17-19 years of age and we need to find them vocational training so they are not forced to return to their village.
