My grandfather, John Deathe, was a loving and courageous man who lived a life defined by service to his country, family, friends, and community.

Some of my favorite memories with him are the simple ones. I would spend summer afternoons swimming in his pool, followed by the mandatory trip to Marble Slab to cool down and end the day. As I got older, I came to appreciate even more about the man behind those memories. He inspired me through his courage as a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, but most of all through the love and commitment he showed to my grandmother, my mom, and everyone around him.

His final years were difficult. After suffering a series of strokes, he began a slow battle with dementia. Over time, I watched a man I had always known as incredibly strong and independent be gradually worn down by a disease that affects not only the person experiencing it, but everyone who loves them.

In his memory, I am committing to run **50 miles on 8/22/2026** while raising money to support the fight against dementia.

The funds raised through this campaign will all go to the Dementia Society of America which provides early-stage seed investments for advanced scientific research into dementia causes and brain health interventions. Ultimately working toward a future where fewer families have to watch someone they love go through what my grandfather did.

For me, these 50 miles are a small way to honor the strength, courage, and life my grandfather showed me. Every mile will be run in his memory and for the millions of individuals and families currently affected by dementia.
