40 for 40 - Celebrating the STNRT

Tax deductible
40 Years ago, June 23, 1979, Verne Orndorff, an employee of the Daniel Boone National Forest saw his dream become a reality.  On that date, a ceremony was held at Cumberland Falls State Park that officially opened up the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail.

Trails don't survive and thrive for 40 years or even one year without support, both financial and from volunteers giving their time to help maintain the Trace.  The Trace, while managed by the Forest Service and Park Service and State Parks, also needs a strong volunteer group to make sure it is protected, preserved and promoted so that future generations are able to enjoy what we share today.

Almost ten years ago, in Verne's hometown of Winchester, the STA was founded.  We continue to do the work of clearing, blazing and planning for trail changes that will improve the user experience and enhance accessibility to the STNRT.  Trails are not stagnant fixed things.  Mother nature is always presenting challenges and opportunities.

Your gift to the $40 for 40 Campaign will help us directly build 9 more miles of trail into Rugby Tennessee in the next year or two.  It will help us to continue to replace signs along the roads that point users to the Trace and expand or create improved trail heads.  Your gift of $40.00 or more will be matched and pooled so that we can continue our quest to connect to the national trails network.

Visit our webpage and social media pages for information on how you can become a member of the STA and volunteer to help us Protect, Preserve, and Promote the Trace.  Any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to us.
