Sustainable Nursery in NW Argentina

Donation protected
**Update - 04/23/14 I am beginning the process of returning to Argentina once again. This time for personal reasons. I graduate PSU in mid-June and desire to go live and work there for an extended period of time. While there I will go to volunter at the nursery that I built and help René with fundraising, maintenance, and operating the nursery. We raised $1620 USD the first time we asked for funds here on gofundme. Now, this year, we want to exceed that. Below is the original description and I think it is still a fitting piece. Thank you for your support, financial and otherwise. You guys are the best! **

I'm going back to Argentina, but I need your help. I am going to San Pedro de Colalao, a rural community in NW Argentina, to establish a sustainable nursery with the purpose of raising indigenous trees - especially the algarrobo or white carob tree - that will ultimately be given away for free in the hopes of repopulating the surrounding area with these trees that once were quite prolific. To offset the costs we will be growing and selling ornamental plants and flowers to the local vacation and summer home inhabitants as to create a sustainable endeavor.

This project has already established community partners in San Pedro with the local office of INTA (National Institute of Agricultural Technology) whose engineer, Cesar Perez, will be my primary partner and the head of my internship opportunity, the Asociación de Ganaderos, which is donating the land that we will be using, and also I have established bonds with Hala Ken, an amazing sustainable farm that serves as a model for sustainability in the region, and Guia Coquena, a local guide service, that is the premier voice in the area promoting preservation and environmental awareness. As much as this is my project, none of this would have happened without the guidance of Professor Leopoldo Rodriguez of Portland State University...and now I need your help. Here's where I need your contribution: startup costs.

I will need funding for supplies such as materials to build the structure, media sombra or shade cloth, all varieties of gardening tools, and money to cover supplying the nursery with water. The nursery will be operated responsibly, without harmful chemicals, use indigenous or organic seeds and starter plants, will by the time I leave have one paid employee, and finally have the goal of establishing an ongoing internship position in which students from Portland State will have an active role in it's functioning.

In short, your donation will help start a reforestation project, will give future PSU students a once in a lifetime opportunity, and in every way possible be a sustainable and green project. Give as little or as much as possible. Every dollar counts. I am funding my own airfare and living costs while there. I humbly ask you to donate any amount you can afford to help me with the costs and to support an amazing project. Although my stated goal is $1000 I would gratefully appreciate continuing donations until this project becomes fully self-sustaining. I have absolute faith that it will. Thank you!

Feel free to follow me on Facebook and I will be creating a blog to keep the contributors up to speed on the progress of the project!
